Construction of Our Hilo House - Page 7

<Page 6   Page 8>

Most of the exterior paint work is done in this photograph. The sheetrock contractors are still hard at work inside, and they have piled their cans of wall compound in the doorway of the garage. It's striking how much the open garage door looks like a mouth with a lot of missing teeth.

The big change in this photograph is that the concrete driveway has been poured! It's a nice, straight, gradual slope with a sizeable turnaround to the left. Another invisible change is that the sheetrock is complete inside. The workers have used up almost every can of compound...either that or the house ate the cans.

At last! Some interior shots! This looks toward the dining room, which isn't really a separate room since it merges into both the kitchen and the living room. Around here, though, you want an open floor plan so that the breezes can blow through the house unobstructed. To the left are the stairs leading to the second floor and the half wall to the right of the stairs is the kitchen "peninsula" where we will have a few stools and extra eating and counter space.

A shot of the living room taken from the dining room. The alcoves to either side of the front door will have built-in book and knickknack cases with solid and glass doors. The cases will contain low-wattage heating bars, very common in these parts for keep the humidity under control. We plan to keep many of the books in there so they don't turn green and fuzzy after a couple of years.
